Holistic Design in Retail: Brooks Running Case Study

Updated: Feb 20

How can brands make a lasting impact in today’s crowded retail landscape? How do you engage consumers in bustling trade shows, flagship stores, boutique shops, and pop-up experiences?

Each environment presents unique challenges and opportunities for brands to tell their story. At Concept Designs Inc, we’ve long recognized the need for innovation in retail design. For over 30 years, our holistic approach has propelled us ahead of the curve, creating solutions that not only meet today’s demands but anticipate the needs of tomorrow.

The Key to Versatile Retail Displays

The demand for displays is growing across a wide range of environments, from holding high volumes of product in the store to creating interactive demos for trade shows or end caps. The challenge is to design a display system that can work effectively in all different settings. The key to success is flexibility. By integrating adaptable features into the design, brands can ensure their displays meet various needs without the need to start from scratch every time. This not only saves time and resources but also gives brands a distinct advantage, knowing their displays can easily adjust to new limitations or opportunities.

Our solutions are designed to proactively address diverse retail settings by prioritizing modularity. Here’s how we approach designing for different retail environments, exemplified by our work with Brooks Running:

Trade Shows & Events

We specifically designed the Brooks Guru Shoe Footwear Island display (below) for Brooks Running sales representatives and field crew (aka Gurus), who needed a solution with portability, easy setup, and a small footprint. The display features a lightweight, durable interlocking aluminum frame, rollable vinyl graphics, expandable hidden product storage, and a quick 10-minute assembly time. The disassembled parts fit conveniently into a carry case and can easily be transported in the back of a car trunk, offering the flexibility and convenience needed for trade shows.

Large Retail Stores

Larger retail environments require more permanent displays that are durable and remain relevant through many product cycles. For Brooks Running, we designed a modular display that integrates many features for full customizability. The Brooks Footwear Wall System functions as a controlled backdrop to define and frame the products, while the integrated fitting bench and viewing mirror invites customers to interact and try on the shoes. The metal framework makes it a 1 or 2-sided freestanding display unit. The mirror cleverly hides a secret storage compartment, allowing for product and spare hardware to be tucked away within reach.

A multi-panel graphic display enhances visibility from a distance and allows for easy graphic updates as new product lines are introduced. The display system is easy to adapt, with removable shoe racks, a slatwall-compatible wall, and interchangeable panel graphics. It can quickly adjust to different store layouts and changing brand needs, without requiring extra hardware or lengthy setup.

Small Businesses & Pop-Up Shops:

For smaller spaces, like pop-up shops or boutique stores, the backdrop panels of the above display system can be hung on slatwall. Individual shoe racks can be used independently in even more restrictive environments, making it adaptable to multiple store configurations. This design eliminates the need for extra floor space while maintaining a strong brand presence.

The Brooks Footwear Tower by CDI (below) prioritizes space efficiency and modularity, functioning as a compact floorstanding unit where the top section can also serve as a countertop display. Its slatwall-compatible shoe racks and interchangeable header add versatility. The design language is consistent with other display items specifically designed for the new Brooks POP program. Our focus on building flexible functionality tailors each display to serve multiple retail and display environments.

CDI Designs for Every Space

In today’s retail landscape, one size doesn’t fit all. The right display must be built to center around the unique needs of product, brand, and retail formats. With this in mind, every display we create is designed with the flexibility to evolve and adapt as the needs of the brand and the retail space change.
